The bowl was left on the windowsill overnight, and by morning the water had gone milky.

The stone lying at the bottom is not quite the stone you set there. Its long pale ribs have softened. The edge that caught the lamp last night catches nothing now. Draw a thumb across it and a fine chalk comes away, dry as the dust on a moth’s wing.

Water did that. Only water, and only one night of it.

Stones look eternal because they outlast the hands that hold them. They are not eternal. Some dissolve. Some rust from the inside until they split along a seam. A few carry metals in them that belong nowhere near a cup, a lung, or a child’s mouth.

What the Mohs Scale Will Not Tell You

Hardness is a measure of scratching. It tells you which stone will mark which, and nothing else at all.

A hard stone can still be cleaved apart by a knock on the wrong plane. A hard stone can still be poisonous. A soft stone may be perfectly harmless in the pocket and ruined by an hour in the sink.

Three separate questions live inside the word safe, and they are not the same question.

Will water spoil the stone. Will the stone spoil the water. Will the stone spoil you.

Ask all three, every time, before anything goes into a bowl. The habits of ordinary care that hold in any other part of spellcraft hold here too, and they matter more with minerals than with almost anything else on the altar.

The Stones That Simply Dissolve

Some minerals go back into water the way sugar goes back into tea. Slowly, invisibly, and then all at once.

Selenite is gypsum, and gypsum drinks. A wand left in a bath comes out furred and dull, the satin gone grey. Satin spar and desert rose behave the same way, because they are the same stone wearing different clothes.

Halite is rock salt, and it will vanish entirely.

Calcite is soft and yields to anything sour — vinegar, lemon, a spilled glass of wine will pit the polish and leave a matte scar.

Anhydrite, sold under the trade name angelite, takes water into its own structure and changes with it.

None of these belong in a soak. A dry cloth is the whole of their washing.

The Stones That Rust, Bloom and Crumble

Iron sulfides are the quiet disaster of a collection.

Pyrite is brass-bright and heavy in the palm, and in damp air it begins a slow chemical unravelling. The gold sours to a powdery grey-green bloom. An acid forms as it goes, and it will eat the paper of a drawer liner and the cardboard of the box beneath. Marcasite, its sister mineral, spoils faster still.

Hematite rusts if it is left wet, and the polished mirror goes to orange freckle.

Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral but a rock, veined with pyrite and calcite, and it carries the weaknesses of all three.

Keep sulfides dry, keep them out of humid rooms, and never let one sit in standing water.

Porous Stones and the Things They Drink

Turquoise is thirsty. It will take up hand cream, perfume, cooking oil and sweat, and it will hold the stain long after the smell has faded. Much of what is sold as turquoise has already been stabilised with resin to stop exactly this.

Chrysocolla, howlite and unpolished agate slices all drink in their own way, and a dyed stone can weep colour into a bowl and dye the water pink.

Amber is not a stone at all but fossil resin, soft and warm and easily fogged by alcohol, solvent and perfume. Jet is fossil wood, light as a nutshell, and it splits when it is dried too hard.

Both want oil-free hands and a soft cloth, and both are treated more fully in the page that keeps them.

Salt Is Not a Gentle Cleaner

Salt has the reputation of purity, and the reputation is doing a great deal of work.

Grain salt is abrasive. Dragged across a polished face it leaves a hundred small scratches that show as haze under a lamp. Dissolved salt is worse, because it creeps into every pore and every hairline crack, then crystallises there as it dries and pushes the stone apart from within.

Salt corrodes silver settings, greens copper wire and pits the base metal of a cheap ring.

A stone buried in a dish of salt overnight may come out looking cleansed and be quietly ruined. Dry smoke, moonlight, breath and a plain cloth ask nothing of the mineral at all, and the methods of cleansing and charging set out the gentler ones in order.

What the Sun Takes

Light is the slowest thief on the shelf, and the only one you never catch in the act.

Amethyst held in a south window fades from wine to a watery lilac over a season, and the colour does not come back. Rose quartz goes from blush to milk. Citrine, fluorite, celestite and kunzite all bleach, and kunzite is so light-shy that it is best kept in a drawer between uses.

Heat does its own damage. Opal is hydrated silica, and a sudden dry heat can craze it with fine internal cracks like frost across a pane.

Moonlight takes nothing. Where a stone is fragile in colour, the night window is the kinder sill.

The Hazard Classes: Stones to Keep Dry and Whole

A handful of minerals are genuinely dangerous, and several of them are sold openly, polished and pretty, with no warning of any kind.

None of these should ever be soaked, tumbled, ground, sanded, cut, licked, powdered, or made into anything that a person drinks. Handled whole and dry, then washed off the hands, most are simply specimens. Broken open, they are something else.

  • Asbestiform and amphibole minerals. Serpentine, including the pale material traded as new jade. Nephrite, which is a densely felted mass of amphibole in the tremolite–actinolite series and is discussed further among the stones kept for money and luck. Tiger’s eye, long described as quartz grown through crocidolite, a fibrous blue amphibole. The danger in this family is fibre and dust, never the polished surface.
  • Arsenic minerals. Realgar, which crumbles to orange powder in light. Orpiment, gold and flaking. Erythrite, in its pink crusts.
  • Antimony. Stibnite, in bundles of grey needles that shed at a touch.
  • Lead. Galena, heavy and mirror-bright, which leaves grey on the fingers. Vanadinite, crocoite and cerussite.
  • Mercury. Cinnabar, blood-coloured and notorious.
  • Copper. Malachite and azurite, soft carbonates whose dust is the hazard rather than the stone.
  • Radioactive minerals. Autunite and torbernite, yellow-green and genuinely offered for sale online.

Wash your hands after handling any of them. Keep them out of bedrooms, off kitchen surfaces, and away from anywhere food is set down.

Never Cut, Sand, Grind or Tumble at Home

The temptation arrives early. A chipped point, a rough edge, a stone that would look better rounded.

Set the temptation down.

Cutting and sanding turn a solid, inert object into airborne particles, and airborne particles are the entire hazard in every class named above. Fibres are not felt going in. Lead dust settles on the floor and stays there. Even ordinary quartz produces a fine silica dust that no household room is built to clear.

A barrel tumbler is not gentler for being slow. It grinds for days and leaves a grey slurry that must not go down a sink or onto a garden.

If a stone needs reshaping, it goes to someone with wet equipment, extraction and a workshop. Not to a kitchen table.

Elixirs: Keeping the Stone Out of the Cup

A crystal elixir is water that has been kept in the company of a stone. That is the whole of it, and the company can be kept at a distance.

The indirect method is the only one worth learning.

  1. Choose a stone you can name with certainty. If the label came from a market stall and the name sounds invented, it is not a candidate.
  2. Seal the stone inside a small clean glass jar, or stand it in a dry glass beside the vessel.
  3. Set the sealed jar into a larger bowl of water, so that glass stands between mineral and liquid at every point.
  4. Leave it through the hours you have chosen — a night, a moonrise, a dawn.
  5. Lift the inner jar out. Dry the stone. Cover the bowl.

Nothing leaches through glass. No fibre, no copper, no lead, no dye, no grit. The intention is carried, and the chemistry is left behind.

Water that has stood uncovered in a warm room is no longer clean water, whatever was set beside it. The same rule governs every jar left out for the sky, and it is written plainly into the keeping of moon water.

What an Elixir Is Not

It is not medicine. It does not treat, cure, ease or replace anything.

No stone in any bowl has a pharmacology. Water that has sat beside amethyst is water. It may be beautiful to drink from a cup you have blessed, and that beauty is a real thing, and it is a different thing from treatment.

If something in your body or your mind is frightening you, the person to tell is a doctor. A stone is a good companion in a waiting room. It is not the appointment.

This holds most firmly where a mineral has a name that sounds like a pharmacy. The resemblance of a name to a drug is a coincidence of chemistry, never an instruction, and never a reason to swallow anything.

Small Stones, Children and Animals

A tumbled stone is exactly the size and weight of the thing a toddler puts in a mouth.

Keep the bowl high. Keep the pouch closed. Keep the hazard classes in a labelled box that does not open by accident, and out of any room where a small person sleeps.

Dogs swallow stones. Cats bat them off shelves and under furniture, and a cat that grooms a paw which crossed a shedding stibnite has ingested it. A grid laid on the floor is a scattering of small hard objects at exactly animal height.

Any stone kept for a child is a large one, smooth, sealed hard, and named with certainty — a plain quartz, an ordinary agate. The rest can wait.

Edges, Points and Dropped Things

Not every injury from a stone is chemical. Most are blunt.

Obsidian is volcanic glass, and a fractured edge is sharper than a surgical blade and far less predictable. A broken point is a broken bottle, and it deserves the same respect, as the page on obsidian itself sets out at length.

Long crystal points snap when they roll off a table, and they snap into splinters.

Fluorite cleaves in four directions and will come apart in the hand from a modest knock.

Sweep breakages with a damp cloth rather than a dry brush, so the dust goes into the bin and not into the air. Wear shoes while doing it.

Trade Names, Dyes and What a Label Hides

Half of the risk on a market table is a naming problem.

Trade names are invented to sell, not to describe. New jade is serpentine. A great deal of cheerful blue howlite has been dyed to imitate turquoise, and a great deal of glass has been sold as quartz with a bubble still trapped inside it.

Dyed stone bleeds. Reconstituted stone is powder held in resin, and resin does not like heat.

Ask what the mineral is, not what the stall calls it. A seller who cannot answer is a seller who does not know, and an unknown mineral is treated as though it were the worst thing it could be — kept whole, kept dry, kept out of the cup. The same clear-eyed attention belongs to choosing a first stone at all.

The Care a Stone Actually Wants

Very little, as it happens.

A soft dry cloth. A brush of the sort used for spectacles. Cool moving air rather than a radiator. A drawer with a cloth between pieces, so that quartz does not lie against calcite and scratch it in the dark.

For a hard, non-porous, positively identified stone — quartz, agate, jasper — a brief rinse under a cool tap and an immediate drying does no harm. Everything else is cleansed without liquid.

What lasts is not the polish. It is the keeping.

The stone that has been handled for twenty years and never once soaked will still hold the lamplight on the night you need it, and that steadiness is the whole reason it was picked up in the first place.
